a bold, adventurous and well-established chamber choir

About Cappella Newcastle

The friendly, mixed-age membership drawn from Newcastle’s local area are experienced and passionate singers with an enthusiasm for stretching the repertoire in many different directions. Underpinned by a spirit of artistic curiosity and adventure, the choir sings new and old music in venues all over the North East. Under the baton of Musical Director Drew Cantrill-Fenwick the choir usually performs three intelligently programmed concerts per year.

LATEST NEWS

It’s my great pleasure to be in touch with details of our forthcoming concerts in and around Newcastle. I do hope there’s something here to whet your appetite and that we see you at a concert very soon!

Next month, on Saturday 6 December at 19.30 at St George’s, Jesmond, we present a sequence of readings and music for Christmas. This year’s programme takes the Nordic world as its inspiration, with carols in both English and Swedish, and featuring the beautiful Santa Lucia tradition. Without giving too much away, there will be an atmospheric, candlelit procession to get you in the mood for the darker winter nights and the cosiness, or hygge, that comes with enjoying simple things like a glass of mulled wine (which will, of course, be available after the concert!).

Looking forward to 2026, we return on Saturday 21 March at 19.30 at St James and St Basil, Fenham with The Wounded Tree, a Passiontide meditation in music. This programme explores themes of suffering and renewal through music by Guerrero, Gesualdo, Julian Anderson, John Taverner, Paul Mealor, and Allegri’s celebrated Miserere. The music of Francisco Guerrero will feature in several Cappella programmes over the next few years as we build towards the 500th anniversary of his birth in 2028. Another notable date is 4 July – American Independence Day – and we will be marking this holiday with a performance of American classics  - on the day itself! The choir will be joined by a brass quintet for an evening of exuberant and poignant music by Bernstein, Copland, Paulus, Whitacre and Barber. There may even be a tango or two to add a little extra swing to the summer night.

Your support of the choir’s activities – whether through attending concerts, spreading the word, or making a donation – is invaluable. It enables us to continue presenting ambitious and engaging concerts, bringing the joy of choral singing to our members and audiences across the region.

We look forward to sharing another season of vibrant and inspiring music with you.
