Last Saturday, at Jesmond United Reformed Church, Cappella presented a fabulous concert, full of truly atmospheric sounds and excitement!
The varied programme featured two world premieres - "Air-Song-Soul" by Lucy Walker, commissioned by us this year, and "Rindik II" by Benjamin Graves, a cadenza extract from a larger work for flute. Two items on the programme were conducted by our conducting scholar Eleanor Cully Boehringer, who has been working with us since Easter, and is showing great promise.
The choir was joined by a number of talented extra musicians, who entertained a large and appreciative audience with their fantastic playing. We were also fortunate to have the services of the handbell players from Northumbria University, who helped immensely with the sudden downpour in Eric Whitacre’s “Cloudburst”.
"God Picks Up the Reed Flute World and Blows", by Christopher Theofanidis was the first item in the concert. Christopher is a skilled, communicative composer, and this piece engaged the audience immediately. Then followed an ambitious, powerful, and colourful programme, taking listeners through various interpretations of the word "air", which finished with a rhythmic and bright performance of "Unclouded Day". This was composed by the American composer Shaun Kirchner - an appropriate choice for the end of our concert, as we bid a temporary farewell to Simon for a year, as he returns to Connecticut. We wish him luck in his endeavours, but would like to remind him that we expect him back!
