Our concert, directed enthusiastically by Tim Cranfield, was enjoyed by a large and appreciative audience. The madrigal was a significant form of artistic choral literature during the  Renaissance, and we presented a varied programme in this genre, in English and Italian. We were skilfully accompanied by John Treherne on the harpsichord, or Sara Salloum on the lute. John and Sara also enhanced our programme by sharing some of their favourite solo pieces, which were interwoven with the singing. Our theme- love in all its guises; glorious to giddy, certain melancholy, and the blush of new love and lust was shown in different styles by several English composers. We also presented Italian works, including Monteverdi’s Lamento d’Arianna, which is full of technical difficulties, but we had worked hard on it in order to convey the sheer vocal beauty and texture of the polyphony to the listener.
